Shanghai’s urban space flickers with advertisements on flatscreen displays. Gone are the days when posters were the distribution medium for new messages. But a large collection of propaganda posters still awaits discovery in Yang Pei Ming’s tucked-away basement museum. With his fine sense for poster art he preserves Chinese contemporary history from the art deco Shanghai calendar ladies to Mao Zedong. Chinese political, social, and art history from 1910 to 1990 can be read here—more colorfully than history books tell.
