NoHo, an area running from East 9th to East Houston between Mercer and the Bowery, gives visitors a good idea of what it was like to be in New York City at the turn-of-the-century. Once home to department stores, dry goods warehouses, and well-off families, the stately limestone, brick and marble landmark buildings are now occupied by theaters such as The Public Theater, coffee shops, and stores. The capacious streets and sidewalks and beautiful heritage architecture encourage leisurely promenades to this very day.
